MSc in Building Information Modelling and Digital Transformation - University of Liverpool

Master of Science (MSc) in Building Information Modelling and Digital Transformation.

A unique programme from the University of Liverpool, UK, hosted by the Royal University for Women in the Kingdom of Bahrain!

Introduction

The Master of Science (MSc) in Building Information Modelling and Digital Transformation (BIM-DT) programme offered by the University of Liverpool is an advanced hosted programme of study delivered at the Royal University for Women, Kingdom of Bahrain. The BIM-DT programme will provide learners with an in-depth knowledge and a critical understanding of BIM theory, processes, applications and tools and their central role in achieving effective, efficient and purposeful digital transformation in Architecture, Engineering and Construction.

Programme Overview

At its core, the programme introduces students to the theoretical foundations of Building Information Modelling (BIM), beginning with the historical development of modelling practices and advancing to object-based modelling and information modelling approaches. It offers a comprehensive exploration of the standardised processes and workflows that underpin effective BIM implementation, with a strong emphasis on international BIM standards and industry best practices.

The programme represents a platform for students to critically examine the real-world application of BIM in the built environment. Students will assess both the transformative potential and the practical challenges of BIM adoption, including technological, organisational, and cultural barriers.

In parallel, the programme explores the fundamentals of computational design, alongside emerging digital technologies and tools such as Virtual Reality (VR), Augmented Reality (AR) and Artificial Intelligence (AI), with a focus on their application in architectural design and construction. In addition, it examines the role of these technologies in supporting sustainable design practices, enabling students to address environmental challenges.

Students will also gain hands-on experience with a range of industry-standard BIM tools and platforms. These include BIM design authoring software, clash detection and model checking tools, and CDE (Common Data Environment) platforms used to facilitate collaborative information management throughout the project lifecycle.

Programme Facts

  • Prestigious UK Master’s degree awarded by the University of Liverpool, delivered in Bahrain
  • One-year full-time programme with flexible evening classes
  • Open to both women and men
  • Designed to explore the future of BIM in architecture, engineering, and construction
  • Taught by international faculty with academic and industry expertise
  • Delivered on a modern, technology-equipped campus

Teaching and Learning Methods

The programme adopts various student-centred approaches to learning and teaching, designed to enrich the student experience and accommodate a diversity of learning styles, interests, and backgrounds.

A combination of formal lectures, interactive seminars, and guided tutorials will introduce theoretical foundations, contemporary practices, and critical issues in the field of BIM and digital transformation. These will be complemented by hands-on tutorials and workshops where students will develop practical skills in BIM tools, digital design platforms, and BIM collaborative workflows based on ISO19650 standards.

To promote active learning, the programme incorporates gamified quizzes and knowledge-based competitions, where students are given curated reading lists and are challenged to demonstrate their understanding through structured multi-choice assessments—fostering both engagement and a sense of community.

Learning will also be supported through one-to-one academic supervision, particularly during the dissertation phase, offering personalised guidance and continuous feedback.

Careers

The BIM-DT programme equips graduates with advanced research skills and leadership alongside practice-informed knowledge of BIM technologies, tools, standardised workflows and project information management. The programme also prepares graduates to be effective contributors in interdisciplinary teams, capable of navigating collaborative digital workflows and supporting innovation across the project lifecycle. Graduates will be well-positioned to pursue a range of dynamic and in-demand roles with the AEC industry. Career pathways include positions such as: BIM Technician, BIM Coordinator, BIM Manager, Digital Technology Consultant, or Architect or Engineer with advanced BIM expertise.

The programme also provides a strong foundation in independent inquiry, critical thinking and methodological rigour, making graduates well-prepared to pursue PhD studies or research positions in digital construction, computational design, or BIM-related fields.

Admission Criteria

  • We accept a 2:2 honours degree from a UK university, or an equivalent academic qualification from a similar non-UK institution. This degree should be in a relevant field of study, e.g. Architecture, Landscape Architecture, Interior Design, Civil/Structural Engineering, Urban Design, Building, Project Management, Construction Management, Quantity Surveying, Architectural Engineering, Architectural Technology, Design Management, Building Surveying, Facility/Asset Management, or a related subject.
  • Applicants with extensive professional experience and/or other prior qualifications may also be considered on a case-by-case basis.
  • Applicants whose first language is not English are required to demonstrate English language proficiency by achieving one of the following:
  •    IELTS overall band score of 6.5, with no component less than 6.0, or
  •    An equivalent score in a recognized English language test.
  • This English language proficiency requirement may be waived if the applicant’s first degree or secondary education was obtained from an institution where English was the language of instruction, provided that this is explicitly stated in the institution's official documentation.
  • Applicants who meet the academic requirements but do not fulfil the English language proficiency requirements may complete a pre-sessional English Language course at the University of Liverpool or RUW before commencing the programme.
