Bahrain National Day and Women’s Day Celebration at Royal University for Women

In a prestigious and engaging ceremony, the Royal University for Women celebrated Bahrain Women’s Day at its premises in West Riffa. The event held Under the patronage of Her Excellency Dr. Shaikha Mariam Bint Hassan Al Khalifa, Supreme Council for Women vice chairwoman and the presence of Her Highness Shaikha Hessa Bint Khalifa Al Khalifa, the Executive Director of INJAZ Bahrain, witnessed a large number of officials, academics and students.
The ceremony began with a welcoming speech from Professor Mazin Jumaah, President of the Royal University for Women, in which he thanked Dr. Shaikha Mariam Bint Hassan for her patronage and constant support for this annual event throughout the years, as well as acknowledging the development of Bahraini women in all sectors of society, expressing his pride in being president of an all female institution. Prof. Mazin lauded the important role of women in the Kingdom of Bahrain citing her outstanding achievements and how women have received high-ranking roles in all sectors through hard work, determination and a will to succeed that matches and at times surpasses their male counterparts. The president of the Royal University for Women also stressed the role of women in building our society and shaping the future generations in her role as a mother, wife, sister or daughter. Prof.Mazin Jumaah, President of the Royal University for Women, also referred to the theme of this year’s event entitled “Women in Engineering”, lauding the achievements of leading female engineers and stating that he believes younger generation of engineers will follow in their footsteps and be leaders in their field.
The ceremony then proceeded with Dr. Janon Kadhim, Dean of College of Art and Design at Royal University for Women, who briefly showcased the findings of a paper entitled “Bahraini Women in The Field of Engineering: Opportunities, Challenges, and Future Expectations” that was presented in a conference organized by Bahrain Society of Engineers last month, stating that even though Bahraini women initially encountered challenges, they were always determined to seize opportunities presented to them to better develop themselves personally and professionally, until they have widely proven their ability to excel in all engineering fields.
To conclude the ceremony, Her Highness Shaikha Hessa Bint Khalifa Al Khalifa presented high achieving students from the different colleges with an award for being placed in the Dean’s list for the previous academic year. A selected number of students also received the coveted President’s award and a special Leadership award for the student that contributed exceptionally and was outstanding during the previous academic year.
Her Highness also presented certificates of appreciations to a number of Bahraini women staff in both academic and administrative positions at Royal University of Women, in recognition to their contributions.
In context of Bahrain's National Day, the university also organized a number of student activities, including a charity bazaar as well as a number of sports events and competitions, in addition to an entertaining performance of traditional Laywa dancing.
Reflecting on the event, Mrs.Sameeneh Shirazie, Acting Director of Student Affairs, described the event as “a tribute to women worldwide, who have achieved commendable achievements in all sectors of society, while continuing to nurture and raise the next generation of leaders”, prior to thanking all the participants, RUW team and honoured guests for their cooperation and participation in the ceremony.
